Symptoms of Varicose Veins and Spider Veins
Many people with varicose veins complain of pain, described as an aching or cramping in the legs. Other common symptoms include tiredness, restlessness, burning, throbbing, tingling, or heaviness in the legs. Pain from these veins is usually relieved by elevating the legs or by wearing support hose.
In women, symptoms may be worse during certain parts of the menstrual cycle or during pregnancy. Less common is swelling, ulcers and a darkening of the skin, especially in the ankle region. Occasionally, varicose veins can form a painful blood clot with inflammation of the vein, a condition called thrombophlebitis.

Frequently Asked Question

What is Venous Disease

"How common are varicose veins?" Vein disease is ten times more common than peripheral arterial disease. An estimated 27% of the adult population in the United States has some sort of vein disease of the legs. It is estimated that in America, 72% of women and 42% of men will develop varicose veins by the age of 65. Vein problems become more prevelant with age and can progress to the point of being disabling. The most common problems involving the venous system of the legs include varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency and deep vein thrombosis (deep vein clots).

What causes varicose veins?"

Varicose veins could occur in isolation or can result from associated venous reflux disease. Venous reflux disease occurs in 10% of patients with varicose veins. However, it is important when treating varicose veins to determine if the patient has venous reflux disease.

"What is venous reflux disease, and what is venous insufficiency?"

Leg veins have one-way valves throughout their lengths, extending from the ankles to the groins. These valves prevent blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. Venous reflux, also known as venous insufficiency, occurs when these vein valves leak.

"Is treatment painful, and will I have to be admitted to the hospital?"

Treatment is an outpatient procedure, performed in about an hour in the office. You will be able to return to normal activities the same day.
